ADAPTIVE REUSE

READ is an international architecture studio specializing in the renovation, rehabilitation, and transformation of architectural spaces, while also capable of new contemporary design. With offices in New York and Miami, we bring a unique perspective to every project.
We design with flexibility - leading or partnering - to create spaces shaped by every voice and built to last.
"FROM OBSOLETE TO RELEVANT: READ TRANSFORMS EXISTING STRUCTURES INTO MEANINGFUL SPACES."
READ approaches adaptive reuse as a way to honor the past while shaping the future. By revitalizing existing structures, we extend the lite or architecture, reduce environmental Impact, and strengthen community identity.
Our design approach emphasizes proportion, material sensitivity, and inventive interventions that reveal the dialogue between history and contemporary needs. Each adaptive reuse project is an opportunity to regenerate communities, support sustainability, and create architecture that endures
We believe that the most sustainable building is the one that already exists. Adaptive reuse allows us to preserve embodied energy, reduce construction waste, and maintain cultural continuity walle creating spaces that meet today's standards of comfort, efficiency, and beauty.

WILSON ART CAFE & GROCERY - Brooklyn NY

We re-imagined a garage and a doctor’s office to become a community store and an event space with café through embracing the neighborhood characteristics of Bushwich and minimal yet intentional design interventions. We coordinated for a full kitchen in the space and provided filing services to ensure the change of use.

WEST VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE ART GALLERY - Manhattan NY

Formerly used as an art studio on the ground floor of the carriage house garage in West Village, we paid homage to the previous owner’s artistic background by re-purposing the space as an art gallery. Existing skylights were transformed into a sunken garden that can be accessed through the residential part of the townhouse above.

READ & MG NYC HEADQUARTER - Brooklyn NY

Once used as a metal extrusion factory and previously used as a home studio, READ and Megan Grehl collaboratively transformed the space for an architectural collective office space and an art gallery. We uncovered the historic “wheel” that was half hidden by the partition walls in the middle of the space, and re-configured the space for its next purpose.
