Located right next to the Weissenhof Siedlung complex, the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste (Academy of Fine Arts) is seeking for an extension building that relates to the Modernist UNESCO World Heritage. The design strategy has to respect and honer the Weissenhof Siedlung as well as the landmark’ed buildings of the academy itself. This proposal uses the existing topographic challenges of the site to its advantage and emphasizes it by creating architectural plateaus of interaction. Connecting public life, academic life and residential life by restructuring the urban infrastructure. Public spaces for pedestrians/cars/bicycles are rearranged and undergo a shift in hierarchy.

The FAR of the extension is concentrated at the main annex to allow for lower buildings closer to human scale within the campus, while still providing enough room for workshops and event spaces. One of those lower building hosts the Arena of Arts, North of the campus. The Arena is located on the roof of the new building housing the seminar rooms, workshops, library, and multipurpose room. It is a new meeting and creation space for students. Its height allows residents and visitors to visually access the Arena of the Arts.
